The high-density AF tracking technology is capable of tracking even aimlessly moving subjects. 425-point phase detection autofocus coverage 425-point contrast detection autofocus coverage
Continuous focus on subjects with real-time tracking
When tracking a fast-moving subject, the camera's motion tracker uses an enhanced subject recognition algorithm (AI)13 and takes into account color, pattern (brightness), subject distance (depth) and face/eye information to recognize the subject. The camera's motion tracker uses an improved subject detection algorithm (AI)13 and takes into account the subject's colour, pattern (brightness), distance (depth) and face/eye information to detect and focus on the subject.
Improved AF with real-time eye detection for portraits
Real-time eye detection AF detects your subject's eyes and automatically focuses on them when you press and hold the shutter button halfway. You can even choose whether to focus on the left or right eye. When AF-C is activated, focus is maintained throughout - even if part of the face is obscured, the subject is backlit or looking down.
Precise autofocus in low light
Thanks to the camera's improved AF algorithm, autofocus is extremely precise even in low light. High AF sensitivity means that AF-S autofocus is reliable up to EV -218.
AF with real-time eye detection for animals
The technology of AF with real-time eye detection has been adapted so that animal eyes14 are now also recognized. When enabled, animal eyes are detected and tracked quickly, accurately and automatically for beautiful animal portraits and wildlife shots.
High-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking
Capture everything with continuous shooting at up to 11 frames per second15. Even when using the silent shutter16 or Live View mode, up to 8 frames per second15 are possible. The display delay has been reduced to a minimum and you can take up to 116 JPEG shots (standard)17 in each burst. There is also the option of group display in playback mode.
Focus magnification for more precise focus adjustment in MF and AF mode
If the focus needs to be particularly precise, for example when taking macro shots, you can magnify the area you want to focus on and then adjust the focus point on the touchscreen or with the focus point selection with ultra-precision.
Simple manual focus with clearly visible peaking function
When using manual focus, the peaking function highlights the sharpest focused part of the image area in color. Blue has been added to the display's peaking colors (in addition to red, yellow and white) to improve the visibility of areas in focus during high-precision focusing for macro and portrait photography.
Integrated 5-axis optical image stabilization
The integrated 5-axis optical image stabilization of our popular full-frame cameras has been adapted for use as a stabilization unit for the APS-C sensor of this model. This system compensates for camera shake along five different axes (tilt and pan axes, horizontal and vertical axes and rotation axis) to increase stability during hand-held photo and video shooting. A high-precision gyro sensor provides an image stabilization effect equivalent to a 5 steps19 faster shutter speed. The function allows you to zoom in on distant subjects, take detailed close-ups, night shots and more - all with minimal blur caused by camera shake.
Innovative image processing
The Exmor CMOS sensor in APS-C format with 24.2 megapixels20 ensures a wide sensitivity range and reduces image noise to a minimum. In combination with the latest generation BIONZ X image processor, ultra-sharp, high-resolution, aesthetic images with excellent texture reproduction are achieved.
Outstanding image quality, low noise and wide ISO range
The maximum ISO standard sensitivity has been increased to ISO 100-32,000 (with extension to ISO 50-102,400 for photos). Improved imaging algorithms, rich detail technologies and area division noise reduction provide more realistic textures, greater detail in shadow areas and more natural colors, skin tones and plant life.
4K Film recordings in XAVC S format with high bitrate21
The Super 35 mm format and the 4K film recordings with full pixel display without pixel binning enable an approx. 2.4-fold oversampling22, as large amounts of data are required for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). Downscaling videos whose resolution corresponds to 6K ensures a more lifelike display with more details. The high bit rate XAVC S21 video codec (up to 100 Mbps at 4K 30p/24p) enables professional quality images in a user-friendly format.
Precise AF tracking with real-time eye detection AF for better movie shooting
Fast hybrid autofocus ensures high speed, precision and powerful tracking to meet the high demands of autofocus for 4K movies. The AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted depending on the subject for stable focus or fast refocusing. Touch tracking allows you to track moving images by simply touching the LCD. Real-time eye detection AF is now also available for movies.
14-bit RAW output for rich color gradations
True 14-bit RAW images are made possible by a powerful LSI and the BIONZ X image processor. To maintain soft, natural color gradations, all processing is done at 16-bit. This means that no dithering or processing errors make their way into the final 14-bit RAW image output. The latest high-speed front-end LSI 16-bit image processing
Creative movie options
The camera's Interval Shooting function24 enables continuous shooting at a set interval of 1 to 60 seconds, from which a time-lapse movie can be created on the PC. Using the simple preview, you can see what the images look like at different speeds directly on the camera. You can record movies in slow motion (up to 5x) and time-lapse (up to 60x) directly with the camera - without any subsequent editing25. As recordings with frame rates of up to 120 frames per second in Full HD are also possible, high-quality slow-motion films can also be created in post-production.
External microphone and audio input as well as headphone connection
External microphones can be connected via the microphone connection. You can also use a line input via the XLR connections with the separately available XLR adapter kit. This allows you to connect various high-quality microphones for professional-level audio recordings. A headphone jack is also available to check the sound of movies during recording.
S-Gamut/S-Log recording23
S-Log recording23 gives you the flexibility to create more expressive videos through color grading in post-production. The S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves minimize overexposed highlights and underexposed shadows thanks to their wide dynamic range (up to 1300% greater than Rec. 709). The S-Log3 gamma setting also provides an impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude.
Sophisticated features for easy filming
The α6600 offers uncompressed HDMI output and recording control, time code (TC/UB), variable frame rates and proxy recording to enable professional-level videography workflows. In addition, a range of functions are available to improve the accuracy of film recording, e.g. the display of overlay markings or grid lines, zebra lines for exposure metering or ISO values for ISO Auto recordings.
Robust, durable construction even for demanding operating conditions
The low-vibration shutter mechanism is designed and tested for 200,000 releases27. Body, top, front and rear cover and internal frame are made of lightweight yet ultra-strong magnesium alloy. Important buttons and dials are sealed. The body components are made of a seamlessly bonded, dust and moisture repellent double-layer structure28.
High capacity Z batteryfor long shooting
For longer shooting, the α6600 is equipped with the high capacity NP-FZ100 battery previously introduced on many of our full frame cameras26. However, the front dimensions are almost the same as the previous 6000 series models. Not only do you benefit from around 2.2 times the total capacity of our standard battery, but also from improved grip ergonomics. The optional multi-battery adapter set for up to four NP-FZ100 batteries enables carefree long-term video recordings.
Improved ergonomic grip
The grip of the α6600 has been reinforced by 6.5 mm (compared to the previous model). As the surface area has also been increased by 15 %, it is easier to grip and hold. The built-in material has been optimized for a better feel and the release button is now at a different angle for easier operation.
Prioritized display of AF area and ISO display limit
A new function displays only the focus area types you use frequently on the AF area setting screen. Another new function on the ISO setting screen displays only frequently used ISO ranges. This allows for more efficient adjustment of settings during shooting. These functions can also be used when "Change Focus Area" is assigned to a custom button.
Bettercontrol of white balance settings
A pre-adjusted white balance can now be locked and unlocked at any time, allowing for more even color tones with multiple light sources. The custom white balance setting has been simplified. You can now set an AWB priority for shooting in artificial light: Atmosphere for warmer tones or White for purer whites.
Betterusability through user-defined functions
A total of four user-defined buttons are available - one more than the previous model. Now 11 buttons (previously ten) can be assigned to one of the 91 recording or playback functions. Frequently used functions can also be assigned to the control dial and the control dial using the personal dial function. The personal menu function can be used to flexibly assign 30 menu functions. The display of user-defined settings means you always have an overview. Helpful instructions for menu items can be called up on the menu screen at the touch of a button.
Aspect ratio of 1:1 for social media
In addition to the 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios (width to height), an aspect ratio of 1:1, which is frequently used in social media, is now also possible. This means you no longer have to manually crop your images before publishing them on social media.
Seamless display in the OLED viewfinder
The high-contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder ensures excellent visibility, fine details even in dark areas, accurate color reproduction and a seamless display at 60 or 120 frames per second. Standard or high quality can be selected for the viewfinder and LCD display.
