Advanced lens technology reduces breath compensation and axis shifts during zooming, reducing distracting frame changes. XD linear motors and the newly developed aperture unit dramatically reduce noise and vibration during movie recording. Breathing Compensation in compatible α series housings5 is also supported.

The Lens is dust- and moisture-resistant with a flour-coated, contaminant-repellent front element. All controls, such as customizable focus hold buttons and independent rings for focus, zoom and iris, provide smooth, versatile control in stills and movies. A focus mode switch simplifies switching between autofocus and manual focus.

Excellent Close-up
AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements provide a minimum focus distance of 0.3 meters (wide) to 0.25 meters (telephoto) for AF, and 0.25 meters throughout the zoom range for manual zoom. A maximum magnification of 0.39x ensures detailed close-ups. Close focus lets you walk around small subjects to find the ideal angle.

Constant Maximum F4 Aperture
The maximum constant aperture of F4 provides great flexibility in aperture selection at any focal length. The selected aperture remains constant throughout the zoom range. Extreme ISO settings at telephoto are unnecessary, and high shutter speeds can be used as needed for the desired effect.
